St. Valentine’s Day, the traditional day on which lovers express their love by sending cards, flowers, chocolates and jewellery.

The day is named after two early Christian martyrs, funnily enough they were both called Valentine!

Valentine’s Day became associated with romantic love in the High Middle Ages, this period in history is the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries.

So that’s quite an old tradition!

Since the 19th century greetings cards have taken the place of hand-written love notes, which un-surprisingly were called ‘Valentines’.

Cupid, god of erotic love and beauty is often used as an icon, as well as all manner of heart-shaped items, preferably in red!
