Susanna Hanl is a self-taught jeweller based in Edinburgh.
Born in Linz, Austria, Susanna attended The University of Salzburg then worked as a teacher until moving to Britain in 2001. In 2003 she re-located to Edinburgh and has been working there as a self-taught jeweller ever since.
She has done costume design for theatre productions ( including Cabaret, The little Gentleman ) and costumes for The Clown Doctors Edinburgh.
Susanna’s jewellery includes different collections in silver and 9ct / 18ct gold, precious & semi-precious stones, freshwater pearls as well as cut and rough diamonds.
Talking about her work, Susanna said: “I’m not very good at talking about me, I’d rather let my work do the talking.
But I absolutely love what I do and although it’s a tough business sector to be in, the greatest reward is when people appreciate and love my work.
I try to come up with new designs and ideas all the time, using different metals (e.g. the Arresting Collection) and unusual stones and cuts.
My one-off collections are inspired by all sorts of things, nature, art, conversations, the materials themselves … and by chance.
And because all my pieces are one offs, I never get tired of making them, as every piece is new and exciting.
They are nowhere near perfect, but I quite like that, because i find customers aren’t ‘intimidated’ to wear my work every day … if that makes sense!”
She added, “I also love a challenge and get really fired up when customers come with special wishes … however, I only take on a commission if I
feel I can come up with the goods, can physically do it and is something I am happy with design wise.
I also feel it needs to be a reflection of the wearer‘s personality or mood and I love the idea that there is only one piece, as unique as the person wearing it.”
In August 2006 she opened her own shop in Edinburgh – Rockcandy Gallery.
